Doofenshmirtz's Daily Dirt was a weekly YouTube series based on Phineas and Ferb, starring Heinz Doofenshmirtz. Running from January 3, 2013 to February 27, 2014, its host talked about current events, pop culture, music, the internet, life, and all things perplexing. Simultaneous to the channel, a Twitter account was set up, in which the character would complement his ramblings.

Production

The series' first episode was uploaded on January 3, 2013, the same day its YouTube channel was created. The following day, a press release was issued to officially announce the show, revealing that it would have thirteen episodes. The same say, the second episode was made available exclusively on the GeekDad website, along with pictures of the third short about One Direction. The first batch ran on a weekly basis on YouTube and Disney Video from January to April 2013, with press releases often accompanying their launch.

The associated Twitter handle was set up on November 29, 2012, and went live on December 19, 2012. In his tweets, the doctor demonstrated his wisdom, referenced pop culture events, jabbed at celebrities, and commented on the topics of his videos. The last tweet was sent on October 2, 2013; the account was shutdown in 2016. By the time it became inactive, it had posted 315 tweets and amassed over 18 thousand followers, more than 10 thousand of which in its first months.

The themes of each episode were mostly inspired by rants of Dan Povenmire regarding viral topics at the time of its making. Staff writers Martin Olson, Jim Bernstein, Scott Peterson, Robert F. Hughes, and Joshua Pruett contributed to the scripts, with the latter writing most of the final shorts. Produced by Julius Harper, the series' visuals were conceived by Alan Gorringe, who animated it to fit its comedic element.

On May 17, 2013, amidst promotion for a special event, Disney announced that 26 more episodes were picked up to be released starting in the summer. A month later, bonus interstitials were revealed to be aired during the Disney XD premiere of "Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel". The second batch of episodes was uploaded weekly for most of its run, with a bi-weekly schedule beginning in November. The show concluded in 2014; its shorts would stay on YouTube until October 2015, and on the Disney website until 2017, when most of them were removed.

During its run, the YouTube channel garnered over 40 thousand subscribers and 3 million total views, passing the one million mark on April 20, 2013. The most popular episode was "WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY? COSPLAY!", which was the only one to reach one million views, in May 2015. The series' uniqueness led it to make a BuzzFeed headline about its hilarious closed captioning mistakes on February 4, 2013. Its only television broadcasts were in the UK, where Disney XD began showing the shorts on March 10, 2014 from Monday to Thursday at 3:55 pm, preceding Phineas and Ferb at 4:00 pm, with new episodes in the first week, and Wander Over Yonder at 4:15 pm.

Shark Tank

Doofenshmirtz's appearance in the reality series Shark Tank was first revealed by TVGuide on April 22, 2013, alongside a sneak peek of it. A collaboration between Disney and ABC, the three minute stunt would be posted on YouTube, ABC.com, and Disney.com following its showing on May 17, 2013. Promotion for this event began in May, with Doofenshmirtz having a back-and-forth on Twitter with the Sharks, and taking over their Facebook page on the 14th.

On Friday, Radio Disney aired an interview with the doctor twice, and an episode of Doof Daily went up discussing Doofenshmirtz's interactions with the hosts that led him into the program. A 15-second promo was also broadcast in between programming. The marketing campaign served to boost the family ratings for Shark Tank and hype up Phineas and Ferb before the start of the summer season.

During the Season 4 finale of Shark Tank, an in-show promo aired in its first half, further hyping up the special guest to appear in the second half. At 8:00 pm, Doofenshmirtz's segment was shown. In it, he presented his Shrinkinator to the cast, looking for a $500k investment of the 1% networth of his invention. The next day, the stunt was posted on the Doof Daily YouTube channel and on Disney.com/DoofSharkTank. It also aired on CTV Two, a channel that broadcasted Shark Tank for the Canadian audience.

Mission Marvel

With the announcement of the premiere date for "Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel" on June 28, 2013, the debut of the special on Disney XD was revealed to be hosted by Doofenshmirtz from his Doof Daily set in a series of interstitials. Six spots had been made to accompany the broadcast on August 25, 2013, which would involve the doctor talking about his antics with the supervillains, and advertising the new game on the Disney XD website.

Titled "Doofenshmirtz's Disney XD Mission Marvel Commentary", each interstitial was around 30 seconds long. In the first, Doofenshmirtz told the viewers to relax, as the episode was about to start. The other four featured commentaries by the doctor on the villains and his interactions with them. A sixth one, presumably promoting the website, was scrapped likely because it did not fit well with the other spots. Unlike other Doof Daily shorts, these were not officially posted in online platforms after their airing.

Background Information

• As disclosed by Doofenshmirtz in the first episode, the show has "Daily" in its title instead of "Weekly" because of the alliteration.
• Unlike the original show, the series is animated with Flash.
• The show had multiple taglines across its platforms:
  • "Just an evil scientist trying to take over the Tri-State area -- and also the Internet in his spare time."
  • "Hands down the best daily show that's actually a weekly show that's also hosted by an evil scientist whose nemesis is a platypus."
  • "I'm going to take over the Tri-State Interwebs!"

• In addition to YouTube and Twitter, a Google+ account was put together in 2014 to also host the videos, being linked in the external links corner of the channel.
• The promo for the Shark Tank event was originally going to be one minute in length, before being cut down to 15 seconds. This was likely done due to the duration of Doofenshmirtz's appearance, which would only be a bit longer than the commercial.
• For unknown reasons, "I CAN HAZ CAT PICTURES?" was removed from the YouTube channel in late 2013.
• "PONIES, ANIME AND BUBBLE TEA" was re-uploaded a day later due to the comment not appearing during the song in the initial upload.
• According to Dan Povenmire, filmmaker Adam Rifkin inspired "'CALL ME MAYBE' IS NOT CRAZY", and "ONE DIRECTION: MOST LITERAL BAND NAME EVER." started as a rant he did on a Radio Disney takeover.
• One of Povenmire's favorite episodes is "PONIES, ANIME AND BUBBLE TEA".
• Despite the extended order bringing the total number of shorts to 39, there are only 38 regular episodes. This indicates that either the Shark Tank stunt or the "Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel" interstitials were counted in the order.
