The Tri-State Area is the name of the metropolitan area surrounding Danville. The evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz often plans to create chaos in this area, not just the city of Danville itself. For such purposes, he built a scale model of the Tri-State Area.
In the map below, the magnifying glass shows that the Tri-State Area is somewhere west of Denver, but Dan Povenmire has said that its location is not fixed. See the "Background Information" section of Danville for more details.
The word "Tri-state area" is used frequently in the show to pinpoint the location of a location. (e.g.Tri-state area Public Library, Tri-state bombers, Good night Tri-state area! etc.)
In the episode Flop starz, Doofenshmirtz points a magnifying glass over the United States, revealing the Tri-state area's location. So it is perceived, by its position on the map, that the three states are Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. While this suggests Phineas and Ferb live in Utah, nothing is known for sure, since, as previously explained, Phineas and Ferb's city, Danville, does not exist geographically.
