Recently, during the quarterly conference call of The Walt Disney Company, Chairman and CEO Robert Iger was asked how the company is able to make a profit out of its Disney Channel arm due to the fact that the network takes no advertising. Mr. Iger responded by pointing out that Disney Channel receives subscriber fees from cable companies as well as money from advertisers overseas in markets where the network carries ads, but primarily the strength of the business is the fact that the successful characters from the network can be used to promote other Disney properties and vice-versa: "We manage these properties across businesses and we leverage their success across businesses. So if you look at Phineas and Ferb, which is a mammoth success on the Disney Channel in the U.S., that is being leveraged as a franchise across a variety of different company businesses. Of note, the tremendous success of a recent mobile game, for instance, is one example, the Consumer Products being another one, and Publishing, the fact that it will show up in the parks, and the fact that we have a movie in development against Phineas and Ferb. So we're monetizing because of the Disney-branded nature of these properties. We're managing these successful properies the way we manage successful properties out of the Studio: as franchises." Because of this, and the popularity of Phineas and Ferb, it's no surprise that the non-mammalian-and-avian-based-superhero dynamic duo are making yet another appearance in the parks, this time with an augmented-reality attraction similar to an experience that was tested out last year at the Disney Store in New York City.
This fall, guests at Florida's Walt Disney World will be able to not only meet Phineas and Ferb at Disney's Hollywood Studios and go on a mission with Agent P at Epcot's World Showcase, but will be able to virtually interact with the Danville gang near Bongo's Cuban Cafe at Downtown Disney. "Phineas and Ferb & You: A Brand New Reality" will allow visitors to partake in one of 20 random 30-second encounters with Phineas, Ferb, Agent P, and Dr. Doofenshmirtz, complete with a souvenir digital photo that can be shared with friends and family online. And, of course, special Phineas and Ferb merchandise will also be offered.
"Phineas and Ferb & You" will take place daily from 2pm to 9:30 pm, September 1 through December 1. More information can be found on the official Disney Parks Blog.
