A new public service announcement about Internet safety starring Disney's own Phineas and Ferb will debut on Wednesday night, January 27 on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The PSA, sponsored by Disney and Common Sense Media, features Phineas and Ferb giving their online safety tips in their signature comedic style. Phineas and Ferb remind viewers that "fame is fleeting, but the Internet is forever"- make sure not to post anything online that could embarrass you or reveal too much information, be polite (don't say or do anything you would online that you wouldn't do in real life), and remember that people online may not be who they say they are. And it's no surprise that the productive duo end their PSA with what may be the most important tip of all- get away from the computer once in a while and have fun with your real friends!
According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation study, kids ages 8-18 on average spend of 1 1/2 hours on the computer each day- only TV and music take out more media time of each day. Only time will tell whether this PSA starring characters that Common Sense Media themselves referred to as "upbeat and good-hearted overall" will be able to help kids use that online time to themselves be upbeat and good-hearted- something the Internet sorely needs more of.
