Les Brown

Les Brown, leader of the Band of Renown and grandfather of Jeff "Swampy" Marsh.

March 14 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Les Brown, famed big band leader and songwriter. On the weekend of March 23-25, his birthplace of Tower City, Pennsylvania, is holding its annual Les Brown celebration. March 24 is the main celebration, featuring various big bands as well as appearances by Les's son and grandson, who will also compete in a trivia contest about Les Brown. Les's son, Les Jr., now leads the Band of Renown that his father founded. And his grandson is none other than Phineas and Ferb co-creator Jeff "Swampy" Marsh. The event will be held from 11:30am to 8pm at the Williams Valley High School in Tower City. Tickets are $8, admission for children is free. For more information, visit the Tower City website.

Alongside this, Jeff "Swampy" Marsh is also sponsoring a Phineas and Ferb-themed contest open to all children in the state of Pennsylvania from kindergarten to Grade 12. Not surprisingly, creativity is the theme here. There are five categories: art (draw an 8 1/2x11" Phineas and Ferb poster), music (compose a Phineas and Ferb jingle with both music and lyrics), computer (design a computer-generated Phineas and Ferb cartoon), creative writing (write a Phineas and Ferb short story), and science (design an inator and explain how it would help take over the tri-state area, drawing/blueprint optional). The winners will be announced at the Les Brown celebration on March 24. A prize will be awarded in each of the five categories in both elementary (K-6) and high school (7-12) levels, with a grand prize from all the submissions being awarded a $100 U.S. savings bond. Deadline for submissions is midnight on March 3. For information on how to enter, visit the Tower City website.
